Survey for all Leaders on Learning & Development/Training

6 February 2012

Girl Guides Australia is undertaking a comprehensive project on our approach to learning and development for new and experienced Leaders. This project has already involved interviews with Leaders and Trainers (in Queensland and the other States), benchmark studies with other Guiding organisations and a survey of all Trainers. The next stage of the study involves a questionnaire for all Leaders.

The Leader Survey has been heavily based on the results of the interviews with Leaders and asks both for views on the current state of play and on possible changes to learning and development.

The Survey is now open until 11 March 2012.

Take part in the Survey.

Girl Guides Learning and Development expert hits the Ground Running

Belinda Allen, Chair Promise and Law Review Working Party, Girl Guides Australia | September 2011

International expert, Kim Parish, has been appointed to undertake a review of how Guiding delivers learning and development for its volunteers. Kim will make recommendations based on her findings to enhance and improve our current Training Program, where necessary, to ensure that our volunteers are provided with the best learning and development opportunities possible.

The project is three fold. It will encompass a comprehensive learning needs analysis, a review of our current approach to training of volunteers, and a benchmark of our program against comparable organisations.

Since her appointment in late June, Kim has met with selected representatives in four States and conducted 60 interviews with State Commissioners, District and Region Leaders, Leaders, State Executive Officers, members of the Australian Management Team, Trainers and State Training Managers.

The aim of the interviews is to gather feedback from key personnel regarding our current training program with a focus on what’s working well, and opportunities for improvement.
The interviews are also collecting data on the skills, knowledge and attributes needed by successful Leaders.

Already Kim has visited Victoria, New South Wales, Adelaide and Alice Springs, with visits to other States being arranged. Although Kim hasn’t made it to Queensland yet, she was able to catch up with Melissa Anderson and Robyn Gibbs at a training session they recently ran in Alice Springs for Northern Territory Leaders.

These State visits will be followed by a questionnaire to member volunteers, providing an opportunity for all Leaders of youth, Leaders of adults, Unit Helpers, Guiding Assistants and others to participate in this important project. An additional questionnaire will be sent to trainers.

The project is currently on track for completion in early 2012 when Kim will deliver a report which will provide a road map for our future.

If you are interested in finding out more about this project, contact Kim via email at kim@girlguides.org.au, or contact the State Training Manager for more information.

A survey has been compiled which takes five minutes to complete and can be found at. We would appreciate your help in assisting to provide this information for the next World Conference.

Guide Leader to present at Australian Youth Conference

Girl Guides Australia | 10 May 2011

Girl Guides Australia urged Leaders, Olave Members and volunteers to support the organisation by taking part in the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) conference in Sydney from May 30 until 1 June 2011.

Guide Leader Jane Harris presented at the conference which was expected to attract over 500 delegates working in youth policy, development and practice.

Jane’s session examined the success of Be the Change and Power Up in encouraging local communities to work together to change the world.

Be the Change and Power Up were held in 2010. Be the Change was a national project that used a peer education model to enable young people to deliver state training and local projects to inspire action on the Millennium Development Goals. Power Up provided young women with advocacy training via state of the art video conferencing facilities.

Throughout her presentation, Jane identified current societal trends and challenges facing our local and global community and will demonstrate the provision of skills development so that young people across Australia can build confidence and have a voice.
