Our Patron

The Patron of Girl Guides Queensland is Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley, AC Governor of Queensland. Girl Guides Queensland appreciates Her Excellency’s support of Guiding and her commitment to developing the youth in Queensland to be the Leaders of Tomorrow.

Message from Her Excellency

Her ExcellencyThis message was provided by Her Excellency for the 2009 Girl Guides Queensland Annual Report.

2009 has been a busy year for Girl Guides Queensland, with an enormous amount of planning and support devoted to the events, activities and aspirations of the more than 6,500 Guides around our State.

2009 has also been full of anticipation and preparation for 2010, the Centenary of Guiding in Australia, which has also been designated the "Year of the Girl Guide" by the Australian Government. It is a wonderful acknowledgement of the tremendous contribution that Girl Guides have made over the past 100 years to their communities, their State and their Country.

While the world has changed dramatically in the past 100 years, the values of Guiding have remained constant: built on the hard work and dedication of volunteers, Girl Guides has continued to pursue its mission to enable and empower girls and young women to grow into confident, capable and responsible community members.Through adventure, friendship and fun, in 2009 as in the century preceding it, Guides have continued to be faithful to those values, and to invite girls and young women from all backgrounds to join in and make a difference in their own lives and in their communities.

As your patron, I commend all members of Girl Guides Queensland on the efforts and achievements of the past year, and look forward with keen anticipation to the wonderful celebrations that the "Year of the Girl Guide" has in store for Guides and their supporters throughout Queensland, as we "… celebrate our past, live the present and power into the future."

Investiture as a Guide

Sue Van Eyk, State Commissioner | May 2010

A highlight of 2009 was investing Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO, Governor of Queensland, as a Guide.

Sue Van Eyk, State Commissioner, and Barbara Leis, Marketing Manager had a very open conversation with Her Excellency on her role as Patron of Girl Guides Queensland. Her Excellency was most excited to hear about our Centenary Celebrations and she is very keen to be involved. She speaks very highly of Leaders and the contributions they are making to ensure that the girls and young women of Queensland have excellent role models to look up to and also have the support to challenge themselves to be the best they can be.
