Should I have been a Guide myself?
Being a former Guide isn’t a requirement for becoming a Leader. Our Leaders come from all areas of society and many professional backgrounds. They are united by their desire to share their life experiences and provide a positive role model for young Guides.

Do I need special skills?
Each Leader brings her own unique set of skills and experience to the role. This diversity and variety helps enrich the experience of being a Guide. Whatever your interests and passions, you will have an opportunity to share them with the next generation of female Leaders. All Girl Guides Queensland volunteers require a Blue Card, which is a State Government requirement for people who work or volunteer with children. When you apply to become a Leader, Girl Guides Queensland will also assist you with your Blue Card application.

How will I know what to do?
Training is provided through Girl Guides Queensland and Leaders gain accredited qualifications through the Australian Adult Leadership Program. The training covers useful topics that also help Leaders in their work and life in general – such as first aid, group facilitation, team work and Leadership. While valuable, the training is not onerous. It is conducted “on-the-job”, at your own pace, and can be tailored to your needs and interests. When you become a Leader, you will also be supported by the other Leaders in your area and will work as part of a Leadership team.

Do you need Leaders in my area?
We need Leaders Queensland-wide in both regional and city areas. We are always looking for Leaders in regional areas and there are currently a number of places where we have a particular need for Leaders. These include St George, Charleville, Townsville, Charters Towers, Ayr, Dalby and Brisbane.

How much time will be required?
Being a Leader involves some regular commitments, and also the flexibility to choose other activities you may wish to be involved in. Typically, Leaders commit between three and seven hours per week which includes a weekly Guide meeting as well as preparation. There are also occasional weekend activities, such as camps and excursions. You will be working with a team of other Leaders from your area who will help you determine the best way for you to contribute your time.

When can I start?
Our programs follow the Queensland state school semesters, so you can start almost immediately if you apply during a school term. As soon as you complete your application and receive your Blue Card you can be introduced to your Unit and start participating in activities.
