Guiding Centenary
100 years of changing lives

2010 was a very exciting year for Guides as we celebrated the Centenary of Guiding as well as the Year of the Guide.

To see how Guides in Queensland celebrated the centenary visit the centenary celebrations page.

Centenary of Guiding

Guides celebrating the centenary of GuidingGirl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world are celebrating “100 years of changing lives”.

Founded in 1910, Guiding began through the demand by a small group of girls to join in an organisation which had just begun for boys: Boy Scouts.

Today Girl Guides is the world’s largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women in the world. Girl Guides Australia today has 30,000 members and belongs to a worldwide Guiding family which extends to 145 countries, with a membership of more than ten million. More than one million Australian women have been or are still Guides.

2010 was an exciting year for all Girl Guide members both past and present. With many activities and events are held across Queensland, there were opportunities for all to join in and celebrate the centenary of Guiding.

2010 Year of the Girl Guide

The Australian Government acknowledged the invaluable contribution of Girl Guides Australia and supported the Centenary of Guiding by designating 2010 ‘Year of the Girl Guide’.

As well, the Government supported the centenary through a range of initiatives.

The Royal Australian Mint produced a circulating one dollar coin to commemorate the Guides and their centenary year, and Australia Post issued three stamps in September 2010.

The Government also provided $600,000 to help Girl Guides Australia celebrate the centenary year. This funding supported:

Girl Guides Centenary Launch, Brisbane, 4-6 September 2009.
Helping girls and young women from disadvantaged backgrounds participate in he launch.
Go Girl, a series of workshops about obesity.
World Environment Day activities that will help Guides work out their “Carbon Footprint” along with how to reduce carbon emissions.
Australian Service Challenge, a disability focused service-wide project to help Guides understand what it means to have a disability.

The 2010 Centenary of Girl Guides was also been supported by the Australian Government Office for Women.
