The Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation conducted their annual awards night on 28 October 2011 in Brisbane. To celebrate the first 10 years of the Outdoor Recreation Awards, they created the Distinguished Achievers Award to acknowledge consistent winners of the Awards since their inception in 2002.

Girl Guides Queensland was one of the first three organisations to receive this prestigious award. Congratulations to the current and previous Outdoors Committees for their outstanding efforts over the
last 10 years.

Community Supporting Police recognise Girl Guides Members at Gala

In recognition of the voluntary work carried out by Community Supporting Police (CSP), the Queensland Police Service held a 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 26 February 2011. During the evening, Pat and Jim Dryden and Pam and Ken Guyatt received Certificates of Appreciation and plaques from the Police Commissioner, Mr Bob Atkinson APM.

The certificates acknowledge their support of CSP as members of Girl Guides Queensland. The GGQ State Executive Officer, Paul Nicholls, and his wife, Velia, attended the dinner and enjoyed the evening.

Mounted Police were in the entrance of the Citigate Hotel as guests arrived and a Police motorbike and puppies from the Dog Squad were on display in the foyer. Highlights included a member of the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums Band piping the Commissioner and Police Minister to their table and Band of Blue (members of the QPS) who provided the dance music. During the evening, Constable Clancy (the huge koala mascot dressed in police uniform) was promoted to Senior Constable by the Commissioner which caused great hilarity. The official book on the history of CSP was also launched and there are lots of photos of Girl Guides.

Guiding Flood Hero Recognised

Dot with Scott EmersonThere would be few people in Queensland who were untouched by the strength and unity that was demonstrated by the Queensland spirit during the 2011 floods.

Dot Dalglish was recognised for her role in helping fellow Queenslanders get through one of our worst natural disasters.

Dot's story is inspiring and will make you proud to belong to this great world of Guiding. Scott Emerson, Shadow Minister and local member for Indooroopilly, recently presented a Queensland Flood Hero Award to Dot Dalglish. This is her story as told by her daughter, Jodie.

“In a small pocket of the world there is a picturesque little neighbourhood called Mandalay, located within the suburb of Fig Tree Pocket. Mandalay was badly affected by the Brisbane floods and, just like many parts of Brisbane, once the water receded, what was left were many homes completely covered and filled with thick smelly mud.

Luckily for the Mandalay residents they had a few things to their advantage - former resident of the area, Bunyip (alias Dot Dalglish), District Leader extraordinaire for Kenmore and a few Guides and Leaders who live in the area. Dot set up the First Aid and Refreshments tent - administering First Aid (just as BP originally intended) and ensuring everyone was well hydrated and sustained.

Dot was very busy organising the Guides to take cold drinks, tea, coffee and food into the houses where hundreds of volunteers were working to clean away the mud and save what precious possessions they could.
Once most of the volunteers had left and much of the mud was out of the houses (the neighbourhood still look like a war zone), everyone headed back to work and normal life ... well, not quite everyone.

Dot put up a sign and invited victims to a “coffee chat”. A space was found and many people needing emotional support had an opportunity to sit and chat to someone about what they were going through.

Dot is an amazing woman - she is always there providing loving service to her community, willing to drop everything to help those in need and always putting others first.”
